Don’t Screw Up Your At-Will Employment Language

DEI and Federal Contractors: Tread Carefully
Trump’s 2025 Executive Order 14173 turned DEI into a compliance minefield for federal contractors. Federal contractors must now certify they’re not practicing “illegal DEI.” Bell had to make 121 adjustments just to stay above water, according to Needham.
And private employers aren’t off the hook. Make sure to review your policies and stay balanced between legal compliance and real inclusion.
Please also remember that Title VII’s anti-discrimination laws are being enforced more vigorously under this administration than ever, and that work is unrelated to the DEI action. This is an important nuance.
Multi-State or Global? Don’t Be Lazy
If you operate across states or countries, “one handbook fits all” is a lawsuit waiting to happen.
A common practice is to use a core handbook with local addenda for places like Rhode Island and China. Cover the federal basics (EEO, FMLA, anti-discrimination) and adapt for local law. You need provisions for each employee or operations center in a different jurisdiction.
Communicate Like You Mean It
A handbook no one reads might as well not exist. Keep your language human, not legalese, and make it accessible and easy to find for your actual employee base.
